Budget 2007 wash-up

The government couldn't ignore climate change in this year's Budget. Peter Costello even mentioned climate change in his speech for the first time. That's a good thing but have they done enough to stave off Australia’s greatest threat?

In Thailand, SolarGeneration youth hold a banner saying "Don't drown our future" in front a Buddhist temple in the coastal village of Khun Samutchine. The village is Thailand's first community to suffer the direct impacts of coastal erosion caused largely by storm surges brought about by climate change. The temple, now beside the eroded coastline, was once located several kilometres from the beach. SolarGenration youth are asking world governments to champion renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) meets this week in Bangkok to discuss ways to mitigate global warming. 1 May 2007. IPCC report lays out options

Renewable energy and energy efficiency are vital. The next two decades are crucial. Changing our energy use is less costly than changing our climate. These are findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report "Mitigating Climate Change".

Greenpeace activists abseiled off the top of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Port Moresby, where delegates were gathering for the start of the 42nd International Tropical Timber Organization's (ITTO) committee meeting. The activists unfurled a banner which read "ITTO Stop Forest Destruction". Unless something is done now to stop wholesale forest destruction there may be nothing left to save. Enlarge image

An urgent message from PNG forests

Delegates of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) received a surprise message today. Greenpeace activists unfurled a huge banner reading "ITTO Stop Forest Destruction" outside their hotel.
