International —
Global protests against waste incineration have reached an all time high.
Greenpeace joined 125 community groups and environmental organisations
spanning 53 countries to call on governments and industry to stop
burning waste and to start recycling it.
The international protests took place as world leaders met in Geneva
for the first time since agreeing persistent poisons must be eliminated
under the Stockholm Convention. The Treaty identifies incinerators as a
primary source of PCBs, furans and cancer causing dioxins, the most
harmful chemicals known to science.
However, governments and industry are still promoting technologies that release these pollutants into the environment.
