Sydney, Australia — December 5 is International Volunteers day, and Greenpeace would like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers inside the office and out in the field.

Without all of you Greenpeace would not be the great and successful organisation it is today!

Greenpeace Australia Pacific CEO Steve Shallhorn says our volunteers are passionate and talented people who offer their time, dedication and commitment to Greenpeace.

“Greenpeace in turn wants to ensure that their contribution is widely recognised, not only within the organisation, but generally,” he said. “On behalf of the board, myself, our staff and everyone who cares about the environment, I say a huge, heartfelt thank you to all our different types of volunteers, for the richness and the value of their incredible contribution. I congratulate them on the difference they have made."

Keen, committed volunteers have always been the centrepiece of  Greenpeace. We were founded by passionate volunteers, and it’s exactly that passion which helps keep the organisation going.

This year volunteers helped us:
  • Launch our new website,
  • Organise events like Art4Action and the City to Surf team,
  • Manage information stalls,
  • Perform street theatre to communicate our campaign messages,
  • In the office
  • Talk with politicians and corporations in person, by phone, letters and emails.
  • In our actions as activists and demonstrators,
  • Within our local groups,
  • Assist schools spread the green message,
  • Distribute our flyers and information resources,
  • Work with other environmental groups,
  • Provide accommodation for visiting interns from overseas or interstate; and
  • Strengthen the environment movement as a whole.
Greenpeace volunteer co-ordinator Paul Hanly says that next year volunteers will again be at the centre of our campaigns in the Australia Pacific region from helping to; ensure a Clean Energy Revolution, Defending our Oceans, preventing genetically engineered foods from spreading and protecting the ancient forests of Indonesia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. “We will continue working together for a green and peaceful future, he said.
