The tens of thousands of individuals who forced the issue of climate change onto the agenda of the 2006 election can be pleased that they have established climate change credentials as a key test of any political party’s right to govern in this and all future elections.

Overall, the policy commitments could be summarised as good progress on renewable energy and energy efficiency, an attempt to set long-term direction for reducing greenhouse pollution (but lacking the short and medium-term targets), but a comprehensive failure to begin the move away from coal necessary to tackle climate change. As yet we have no guarantee that greenhouse pollution will fall between now and the next state election in 2010, and it’s very unlikely to do so.
