An increase in nuclear shipments around the Australian coast has prompted an international report investigating the safety of nuclear shipments and Australia's ability to deal with a nuclear accident at sea.

The report , A Review of Aspects of Marine Transport of Nuclear Irradiated Material, by visiting British marine pollution expert, Tim Deere-Jones reveals a range of concerns about plutonium fuel and nuclear waste shipments, and the lack of effective emergency planning. The report shows that Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL) ships like Pacific Pintail and Pacific Teal which recently travelled past Australia do not meet the highest safety standards. Nor does the COGEMA ship Bougeunais which carried spent nuclear fuel from Sydney's Lucas Heights reactor.
