3 November 2007: Over 100 people with kayaks attempted to halt loaded 
coal ships from leaving the port of Newcastle, the world's biggest 
coal port. The blockade, organised by Newcastle grassroots 
organisation, Rising Tide, was a peaceful action drawing attention to 
coal's role in causing climate change. In April 2007, the NSW 
Government approved a new coal export terminal and a major expansion 
of the existing Kooragang coal terminal. This would see the 
Newcastle's coal exports reach 211 million tonnes a year, over three 
times the NSW domestic greenhouse pollution from all sources.
