Month in pictures: November-December 2008

Climate change kept us busy during November and December 2008. The Walk Against Warming saw thousands strut their stuff in colourful gear; Kevin Rudd announced a miserable emissions reduction target and we kept a watch on international climate negotiations in Poland. We also launched the 2009 True Food Guide and built a beautiful whale sand sculpture on Bondi beach.

The Paradise Forests of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea are disappearing at a faster rate than any other forests on the planet. Protect forests, save our climate

August 2008: Greenpeace has launched our Forests for Climate tour with a colourful welcome in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Our ship, Esperanza, is touring the region protecting forests and showing how deforestation contributes to climate change.

The month saw the Energy [R]evolution ship tour kick off from Sydney, led by Greenpeace ship the Esperanza up the east Australian coast. We highlighted the need to address climate change through practical and effective renewable energy solutions.

28 July 2008, MACKAY AUSTRALIA Greenpeace activists in inflatables targeted a queue of almost 50 coal ships at Hay Point port in Queensland and are currently painting them with climate change protest messages such as: 'RUDD EXPORTING CO2', 'BARRIER REEF GONE', 'ICE CAPS GONE' and 'STOP COAL EXPANSION'. The peaceful action is to highlight the Rudd Government's plans to rapidly expand coal exports, when the world is trying to cut global emissions. Enlarge image

20 ships, one message: Stop coal expansion

On 28 July 2008, Greenpeace activists painted climate change messages on 20 ships in Queensland's largest coal port at Hay Point. Messages included "Coal is killing reef" but the main message? "Stop coal expansion".

Wednesday 9 April 2008, Hunter Valley, NSW: At dawn this morning the Greenpeace hot air balloon flew over Liddell and Bayswater coal-fired power stations in the Hunter Valley, delivering a spectacular climate change message to the federal government: ‘Save the climate - No future in coal’. The balloon, flown by an experienced hot air balloon pilot, floated above the smoke stacks of the power stations with its urgent call for climate action just days before the deadline for public submissions to the ALP’s much debated Garnaut Review.
