The New South Wales and Victorian state governments have decided to allow the commercial planting of genetically engineered (GE) canola in 2008.
This will be the first GE food crop to be grown in Australia and will destroy the country's GE free status forever. The South Australian and Tasmanian governments are also reviewing their GE food crop bans.
Canola is used in many of the food that we eat everyday, like margarine and bread, and is also used as animal feed. There is growing scientific evidence that GE crops are harmful to the environment and may be harmful to human health. Like cane toads, the release of GE canola would be irreversible. Over a decade of growing GE canola in Canada has shown that contamination is inevitable wherever GE crops are grown. Growing GE canola in Australia will contaminate our fields and our food, removing choice for the many farmers and consumers who want to stay GE-free.
The decision can be reversed – but we need your help.
Please pressure your premier and MP to keep our fields and food free from GE contamination.
