Executive summary: Hazardous chemicals that are used in everyday householdproducts end up in the bodies of unborn children viathe mother.This study, conducted for Greenpeace and WWFUKby TNO, analysed blood samples donated by a number ofwomen and confirmed that hazardous chemicals areunwittingly passed from mother to child. Previous studieshad already reported the presence of hazardous chemicalsin human blood and tissues and the ability of somechemicals to pass the placenta. This study further confirmsthat known or suspected hazardous chemicals from eightchemical groups are commonly present in umbilical cordblood.These findings underscore the urgent need to providemechanisms to replace such substances with safer alternatives.
