We on the Greenpeace forest campaign team are feeling inspired this week. Since we made public our response to Resolute’s attempt to intimidate us into silence through a $7,000,000 lawsuit, the number of organizations supporting us has doubled. We’re fighting not just for us, but for all organizations and individuals that seek to advocate for the protection of our forests and the communities that depend on them.

We are fighting for you and your right to freely express your concern about a company’s operations, without fear of a lawsuit. Organizations like US-based Dogwood Alliance, the influential Council of Canadians, and the hard-hitting Action Boreale have, in the last week, voiced their concern about corporations attempting to limit freedom of expression and public participation.

We need your donations to fight this bullying tactic! With your help, we will not be silenced!

As my colleague  in the UK summarized so simply: “It's ironic that Resolute is taking legal action, because it's showed nothing but disdain for the laws that protect forests. It has breached more forestry laws and regulations in Quebec than any other company over the past decade and has had to pay over $1.2 million in fines.”

The lawsuit speaks to the measure of the company. Rather than work with us and other organizations and communities to find workable and lasting solutions that can save endangered species, protect key areas of forest and ensure a vibrant forest industry, the company is suing Greenpeace (and me personally, by the way). The lawsuit is nothing but a bullying tactic to try to silence us. And send a message to other organizations to “watch out.”

But we won’t be silenced. And thankfully other organizations won’t either. Help us fight back: donate to our Forest Legal Defense Fund.

There is a tide rising. We need to come together to stop corporations and governments from using bullying tactics and limiting the public’s rights to comment on issues of public interest like the future of our forests.

If you represent an organization and care about freedom of expression, email to lend your support.
