Rain could not dampen our spirits this morning as the Greenpeace Canada Sustainable Seafood Tour made a stop at the Sobeys in Peterborough. The Sobeys chain sells 14 out of 15 redlisted species and has received a failing grade of 1.1 out of 10 in Greenpeace's Out of Stock, Out of Excuses report.
In spite of Sobeys recent progress towards the planning of a sustainable seafood policy, we are still waiting to see meaningful action on their behalf. Our activities today are intended to send a strong message to the Sobeys head office, the ominous-sounding Empire Company Limited: act now and implement a comprehensive sourcing policy for marine meals, and become a champion of responsible, sustainable seafood.
The employees, customers and media on-site were highly receptive to our message and I was interviewed by reporters from CHEX TV, The Peterborough Examiner and Mykawartha.com. The Sobeys Manager, Al, was especially enthused by our demonstration commenting "This is cool" as he came out to take photos of the installation with his blackberry and "Good luck with your cause" as we were preparing to leave the front of the store.
Hopefully head office at Sobeys will echo this sentiment and prioritise their plan to provide their customers with the sustainable fish they wish.
