In the face of the massive forest fires and one of the largest oil spills in Canada’s history, the people of Little Buffalo — the community nearest to the oil spill, and the community where I’m from — continues to deal with the aftermath.
However, this massive oil spill is not the beginning of the problems that the Lubicon Cree face. Since 1979, the Lubicon Cree have dealt with extensive oil, gas and logging extraction in their traditional territory. These historical injustices have been documented by various UN Human Rights bodies for the past two decades, and yet the government of Canada has continuously failed to act. In fact, as the Harper government turns a blind eye, these cases only continue to grow.
