With hopeful news from the feds last week that the critical habitat of the southern and resident orcas off B.C. is now, as of Wednesday, legally protected under the Species at Risk Act, the orcas have shown their gratitude with another new baby, spotted off Vancouver Island over the weekend.
The reversal of the feds' original decision that the habitat was already legally protected to one ordering that all habitat be legally protected was a precedent setting. However, the southern residents remain endangered and the northern residents remain threatened, so we still must work to see how this Order will turn to action for the orcas, so stay tuned. In the meantime, we hope all species at risk in Canada are afforded the same opportunity for recovery.
