You ever know someone who is always late?
Energy Minister George Smitherman just announced his government has - again - delayed the decision on what reactor design will be built in Ontario. The government says this is due to the global economic crisis, but we can expect more bumps in the road if the province continues down the nuclear path.
In New Brunswick the life-extension of the Point Lepreau nuclear station appears to already be behind schedule (they started the work in April). Similar work at the Bruce nuclear station here in Ontario is $300 - 600 million over budget. In Finland, the construction of the AREVA's EPR reactor has been delayed 3 years.
We shouldn't be gambling our energy future on nuclear construction projects. Aside from being clean, renewable energy and conservation can be deployed quickly to keep the lights on and fight climate change.
