Kulluk Breaks Away and Runs Aground

1 January 2013. Waves crash over the conical drilling unit Kulluk where it sits aground on the southeast side of Sitkalidak Island, Alaska. A Unified Command, consisting of the Coast Guard, federal, state and local partners and industry representatives was established in response to the grounding.

The Cree Nation of Waswanipi is fighting to protect its ancestral land from logging. The Broadback Valley, located close to James Bay in northern Quebec, Canada is at heart of these lands and is one of the last intact forests in the region.
