(LEFT) This photograph of Elena Sergeevna Gurok (age 19) was taken in the Kiev Hospital’s Oncology Ward of Endocrinology. Elena comes from the Chernygiv Region in the Ukraine. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002 and again in 2005. Following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, thyroid cancer is an epidemic in the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, especially amongst women.
(RIGHT) Ms. Sato used to live in the Kawamata district. However, when radiation levels grew too high, she and her children left their farmhouse. Her children have dropped out of school. Like many other evacuees, they now live in temporary housing in an apartment complex in Yonezawa.
