(LEFT) Forgotten items in an abandoned kindergarten in Prypiat (population 50,000), which was evacuated three days after the explosion in reactor number 4 at Chernobyl. Only a few kilometres away from the plant, the town was severely contaminated. It is now a ghost town in one of the so-called ‘closed zones’, restricted areas with dangerously high contamination levels.

Its students were evacuated to protect them from the radioactive fallout that has now significantly contaminated their village and surrounding areas.
