STATEMENT - Greenpeace: Trudeau actively chose not to act on plastic straw ban

Press release - April 19, 2018

April 19, 2018 (TORONTO) - In response to Justin Trudeau’s lack of commitment after Theresa May announced a move towards a ban on single-use plastics and urged other Commonwealth leaders to follow suite, Greenpeace Canada plastics campaigner, Farrah Khan, said:

'Banning plastic straws and other single-use plastic items is an obvious choice for ocean protection. Justin Trudeau actively chose not to commit when he could have seized the opportunity to ban unnecessary plastics from polluting our planet and threatening marine life such as whales, sea turtles, and seabirds. The Canadian government can and should take strong national action to ban single-use plastics, as they are going to do with microbeads, and Prime Minister Trudeau now must use his G7 presidency to take bold action to stop plastic pollution at the source. The world is watching.”
