Redlist species sold
Sells 13 out of the 15 Redlist species.
Has committed to stop selling some unsustainable species but has
not given date for this.
Sustainable seafood policies and labeling
Loblaw launched its sustainable seafood policy in May 2009. It
has committed to sourcing all seafood from sustainable sources by
2013. The policy covers all canned, frozen, fresh seafood,
including both private label products and those sourced from other
companies, across all categories for both farmed and wild
seafood.
Seafood products currently have insufficient labelling. Loblaw
has indicated that by 2013, it will provide better information
which may include the species' scientific name, country of origin
and fishing or farming method.
Kudos
- Developed a sustainable food policy which applies to all
seafood sold in all stores.
- Has committed to removing certain unsustainable species from
sale.
- Supports sustainable seafood alternatives. Started selling ten
MSC certified products in 2008, is to add more in 2009.
Criticism
- Policy specifies few criteria for evaluating seafood.
- Many Redlist species still on sale and action for removal is
slow or undetermined.
- Heavy reliance on seafood certification; none of which
Greenpeace endorses and some of which do not yet exist.
