Greenpeace Canada offers its condolences to the family of Charles Caccia, a strong advocate for the planet. He died Saturday at the age of 78.
Mr. Caccia was a passionate environmentalist. He sat in the
House of Commons for 36 years and served as the federal Minister of
the Environment from 1981 to 1983. He was also Chair of the
Standing Committee of the House of Commons on Environment and
Sustainable Development and head of the Parliamentary Centre for
Environmentally Sustainable Development.
He was known for his great depth of knowledge on environmental
issues and could draw upon his recollection of studies and
recommendations that had been made many years before.
After leaving parliament, Mr. Caccia continued to work on
environmental issues as Senior Fellow at the Institute of the
Environment, University of Ottawa.
