Shame on Harper as UN votes on stopping high seas destruction

Feature story - November 13, 2006
Dressed as fish, squid and other deep sea creatures, Greenpeace activists held banners reading “Shame on Harper” and called on the Prime Minister to end his complicity in the destruction of the world’s oceans.

Greenpeace activists dressed as deep sea creatures are caught along with "Stephen Harper”. The demonstration against the governments position on bottom trawling took place near Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

The United Nations will vote this week on stopping high seas bottom trawling, an incredibly destructive method of industrial fishing that has been called "clearcutting the ocean floor".

The Canadian government has indicated that they do not support the moratorium, in effect casting their vote for continued ocean destruction.
