Global warming is an unequivocal threat to our environment and ultimately our lives.

Two degrees Celsius is the critical threshold acknowledged by the scientific community. If global average temperatures increase by more than 2°C over pre-industrial levels during the current century, the consequences will soon become catastrophic. By keeping global warming as far below that threshold as possible the worst consequences can be avoided. In order to achieve that, the industrialized countries must reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at least 25 to 40 per cent (from 1990 levels) by 2020.

Here in Canada our government has ignored its own legal commitment to reduce  greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol. Canadians deserve better. We are entitled to a responsible government that will take responsibility for our share in the international effort to fight global warming.

Here’s how you can get involved.
Your participation can ensure that Canada acts promptly to solve the climate change crisis.

We are asking elected officials across Canada to sign the KYOTOplus pledge supporting strong measures to solve climate change. The leaders of the opposition in Ottawa were the first to show their support during an official ceremony. Others have done the same. The list of supporters is getting longer all the time, and you will soon be able to read it.

You too can sign the KYOTOplus petition. You can add your voice to the thousands of other Canadians demanding that Canada reduce its greenhouse gases at least 25 to 40 per cent (from 1990 levels) by 2020.

Your signature counts, because change begins with you. It begins with you and then thousands will follow, because we must act to save the planet. This petition will play an important role. It will be delivered at the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference that will take place in December 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This conference will make a crucial decision about a second phase to the Kyoto Protocol.  This is where we will show our commitment and work together. The fate of the planet will depend on it.
Let's all take the road leading to Copenhagen...

Why do we need the KYOTOplus Campaign?

Global warming is an unparalleled and “unequivocal” man-made environmental crisis. Around the world we are already witnessing numerous climate change impacts, including ice-loss, drought, flooding, extreme weather events, and forest fires. In Canada, we have seen the melting of glaciers, the dramatic loss of sea-ice in the Arctic, loss of perma-frost, and the destruction of forests by the pine beetle. Without immediate action, long-term impacts such as rising sea levels will result in millions of environmental refugees and destruction of crops will lead to world-wide famine.

It is widely accepted that in order to prevent catastrophically dangerous climate change, the global average temperature increase above pre-industrial levels must be kept below 2 degrees Celsius. In order achieve this, global greenhouse gas emissions must be stabilized and begin to decline before 2015, and be further reduced to less than 50 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050. This means that developed countries, including Canada, must reduce emissions 25 to 40 per cent by 2020, and 80 to 95 per cent by 2050.
