Take responsibility for your personal contribution to global warming.

There is a lot you can do to conserve energy and help stop climate change at home, at work and in between. Here is a quick list of things you can do to reduce your personal emissions impact.

1. Don't drive

We know it might be a lot to ask, and for many people it might not be possible. If you must drive, carpool whenever you can and make sure to check fuel efficiency standards before buying a new car. And, of course, take public transportation, walk or bike as often as you can!

2. Keep heat in

There are a lot of things you can do around your home to cut down on energy use and save on heating costs. Simple steps like super-insulated glazing for windows and additional roof insulation can make a real difference. Get more information from the federal government about how you can make your home more energy efficient.

3. Buy efficient appliances

In Canada, the 'Energy Star' symbol is a good indication that an appliance is energy efficient. Make sure your washer, dryer, refrigerator and other electrical appliances are energy efficient. Dryers in particular are extremely energy intensive. Whenever you can, avoid using the dryer and hang your clothes up to dry naturally.

4. Explore clean energy

There are clean energy options available across Canada to home and business owners. Solar power in particular offers individuals, families and businesses a number of options for heating and hot water. For more information about solar energy, please visit the Canadian Solar Industries Association.

5. Get involved and stay informed

There are many ways to get involved in the fight against global climate change. Joining Greenpeace is a great way to help convince governments and industry to change destructive practices. You can also sign up to become a Greenpeace cyberactivist. You'll receive monthly bulletins and action alerts, and we'll keep you informed as we continue to work to stop the devastating advance of global warming.
