The federal government is scapegoating wolves!

Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent is refusing to issue an emergency order to protect caribou in Alberta despite a court order asking him to do so in light of rapid population decline.

He insists that Alberta’s caribou recovery strategy – which relies on killing wolves – is adequate. However, wolves aren’t the real problem. Industrial development, such as the rapid expansion of the tar sands is what has pushed caribou to the brink.

Science shows that killing wolves won’t save caribou in the long term – only habitat protection will protect them. Tell the federal government to stop blaming wolves for a problem humans have created, and to get to the root of the problem by protecting caribou habitat now.

Dear Minister Kent,

I am very disappointed that you are refusing to issue an emergency order to protect caribou despite Justice Peter Crampton’s order. Alberta’s recovery strategy, which prioritizes wolf culling over habitat protection is not adequate for safeguarding the species.

The scientific consensus on caribou is that industrial disturbance is the primary driver of caribou decline. The species has faced 50% range loss throughout Canada in the last 50 years. In addition, more than half of Canada’s herds are no longer self-sustaining. The situation is particularly dire in Alberta where decades of logging and tar sands extraction have put several herds at the brink of extinction.

To truly protect caribou from extinction, the wholesale destruction of their habitat must stop. Culling wolves, while taking the pressure off threatened herds in the short-term, will not stop caribou decline. Science shows that predator control on its own is not an effective way to recover species. More troubling, a wolf cull will have other unintended consequences in the Boreal ecosystem and will distract attention from the real problem: habitat loss.

I urge you to tackle the problem head-on and save Alberta caribou from extinction by halting the loss of their habitat. This can be done by stopping the expansion of tar sands operations, keeping logging out of high value caribou habitat, and creating protected areas in Alberta large enough to meet the needs of the species.

This, not culling wolves, is what will save Canada’s woodland caribou. Please take your responsibility as Environment Minister seriously and take action immediately to ensure caribou have adequate habitat.
