A Greenpeace China report - Summary
The Real Cost of Nitrogen Fertilizer in China
China feeds 22% of the world’s population with only 7% of the world’s arable land – a seemingly remarkable feat, until one takes into account that China also uses 35% of the world’s fertilizers. Unfortunately, this comes with a heavy environmental toll: the country’s heavy dependence on fertilizers and pesticides is about to reach the limit of the agricultural system’s carrying capacity, thus posing a severe threat to farmers’ long-term livelihood as well as food security. It also worsens national problems such as the further deterioration of the rural environment, environmental pollution and the wasteful consumption of energy and resources. China urgently needs to transform its current agricultural production model towards an ecological one.
