Vancouver, Canada — As many as 70% of the processed foods on store shelves may contain GE ingredients. Consumers have a right to know what is in the food they eat, so that they can have a choice as to whether or not to consume this untested and risky technology. GE presents enormous dangers to the environment and biodiversity. The safety of GMOs to human health is still untested.

According to the recent Greenpeace/Genewatch GM Contamination Report, there have been 142 cases of GMO contamination worldwide and 9 contamination incidents in Canada in the past ten years.   Once you release genes into the fields and into the food chain you can never know what they will do.  Greenpeace opposes putting genetically modified organisms in the environment.  As an interim measure, we demand mandatory labelling to give consumers the ability to say no to this technology.

Our petition demands that mandatory labelling be adopted in BC before the next provincial election.  BC has the opportunity to lead the way for the country on this issue.  Please download the petition, distribute it in your community and return it to Greenpeace.  Make Gordon Campbell listen to the 80% or British Columbians who want mandatory labelling of GMOs.
