This forest is tucked amongst majestic mountain fjords creating a cool, misty world of soaring eagles and towering cedar, fir and spruce trees. Home to wild runs of salmon, delicate green ferns and soft carpets of moss, the biomass (weight of organic matter) of this forest is four times greater than comparable areas in the Amazon jungle.
But it is the bears that give this forest its name. Grizzly bears, black bears and the elusive Kermode or spirit bear, a white variety of the black bear, all thrive in this lush rainforest.
Since 1995, Greenpeace has been striving to protect the Great Bear Rainforest and this work is far from over. The Great Bear Rainforest campaign has been built on the vital engagement of forest product customers around the world, the non-violent direct action of thousands of activists, and the stand taken by courageous First Nations to protect their traditional territories. It continues with long hours of negotiations in the dim florescent lighting of countless boardrooms.
Bringing independent science into discussions, promoting responsible purchasing policies and certification systems and planting the seeds of a conservation economy for the region are examples of the critical work that Greenpeace and our allies are undertaking. The goal is to obtain lasting solutions for the Great Bear Rainforest while ensuring that a network of large-scale protected areas remains in the rainforest, destructive logging practices are transformed into a sustainable system of harvesting, and a stable future is created for the communities that depend on the forest and seas of this magnificent coast.
