Keep your promise in the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements: Protect the northern goshawk

Take action to protect the northern goshawk

Critical habitat for northern goshawk should have already been mapped out in a reserve network and set aside from logging, as part of Eco-system-Based Management for the Great Bear Rainforest. However, after many delays there is still no reserve network and northern goshawks are potentially at risk.

Please send British Columbia’s Premier Gordon Campbell and Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell an email. Encourage them to keep their promise in a timely way to the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements and EBM to ensure protection for the northern goshawk and its habitat.

Dear Premier Campbell and Minister Bell,

Your government has shown leadership by putting in place a visionary process to ensure the Great Bear Rainforest’s lasting protection through working closely with First Nations, environmental organizations and industry by implementing Ecosystem-Based Management.

The 2009 and 2006 Agreements committed your government to protecting the Great Bear Rainforest, its key species and their critical habitat through EBM, which I support. Although there has been good progress, I am however concerned about the delays in implementing the agreements. Critical habitat for the northern goshawk remains at risk because it has not been set aside through a reserve network. Northern goshawks and their habitat need to be protected as part of a reserve network for a healthy rainforest ecosystem.

The Great Bear Rainforest has the potential to be a world-class model for conservation and should be a legacy from the people of British Columbia to the world. Please meet your commitments to the Great Bear Rainforest and get those critical habitat areas for the northern goshawk into a reserve network without further delay.
