Hunting for the "Sport" of it

A scientifically credible province-wide census of grizzly bears has never been carried out in British Columbia. Despite this, the Provincial Liberals lifted a moratorium on the grizzly bear trophy hunt when they first took power in 2001.

In 2003 alone British Columbia’s trophy hunt claimed the lives of some 230 grizzly bears. Grizzly bear populations are primarily threatened by habitat destruction, but because they reproduce slowly they are also specifically susceptible to the impacts of hunting.

Polling shows that 78% of the Liberal’s own voters support a moratorium on the grizzly hunt, but the policy persists.
