Global protest over arrest of Japanese whale activists

Greenpeace today peacefully demonstrated in front of the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa to demand justice for two Greenpeace activists who have been unnecessarily detained in Japan for exposing a major scandal involving whale meat.

The demonstration at 255 Sussex Drive in Ottawa was part of a series of peaceful protests at some 20 Japanese embassies around the world calling for the immediate release of Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki.

In addition to the demonstrations, Greenpeace is encouraging people to send emails of protest to the Japanese government. So far, more than 180,000 emails have been sent to the Japanese Government calling for the release of the activists, dubbed the Tokyo Two.

UPDATED - Outrage: Greenpeace whale meat scandal whistleblowers arrested in Japan

Japanese police have arrested two Greenpeace activists for exposing a whale meat scandal involving the government-sponsored whaling programme. The two activists, Junichi Sato, 31, and Toru Suzuki, 41, are being investigated for allegedly stealing a box of whale meat which they presented as evidence.

Out of Stock: The report

Today, Greenpeace issued a new report “Out of Stock: Supermarkets and the Future of Seafood,” that documents the severe threat to the sustainability of seafood. In the report, Greenpeace urges Canadian supermarkets to shoulder their share of the responsibility for the collapse of fish and seafood stocks by not selling the most threatened species, all of which are on a Greenpeace Redlist. In total, 15 species groups are flagged on the Redlist as those that should not be bought or sold.

World's largest tuna destroyer

We chased it for 5 days, but as dawn broke over the Pacific this morning we finally confronted the biggest tuna fishing vessel in the world. The Spanish-owned and flagged tuna purse seiner "Albatun Tres" is known as a 'super, super seiner' and can net 3,000 tonnes of tuna in a single fishing trip. This is almost double the entire annual catch of some Pacific island countries.

Greenpeace discovers new species in threatened Bering Sea

Our research voyage to the Bering Sea has led to the discovery of a species of sponge new to science. Using state-of-the-art manned submarines to explore the world's deepest underwater canyons the new sponge was collected in samples of never before seen life from the Bering Sea floor, discovered by Kenneth Lowyck, Actions Coordinator for Greenpeace Canada.
