Greenpeace is campaigning to stop the overexploitation of our oceans, marine species and coastal communities that depend on it. Destructive fishing and fish farming methods, rising catch quotas on falling stocks, illegal pirate operations, poorly managed marine resources, continued commercial and sham scientific whale hunts, and the mounting contamination of ocean ecosystems are all reasons why Greenpeace is working to protect our oceans through a global network of marine reserves.

Armed with independence and supported by activists, Greenpeace works to defend the oceans. But above all, Greenpeace is you.  It’s your support, your letters, your messages and acts which are transforming the world in the right direction.

Oceans projects

Polar Oceans

The Arctic and the Antarctic, two of the greatest wilderness areas on Earth with ecosystems vital to the functioning of our planet, are under assault from the impacts of rapidly accelerating climate change, industrialization, and the unchecked consumption of our planet's resources.

Sustainable Seafood Markets

The seafood we find in our supermarkets does not grow on trees; it is sought out in every corner of the world’s oceans or raised in aquatic farms that are increasingly occupying our global shorelines. Industrial fleets are traveling into deeper, more distant waters, employing state of the art technology in search of many species that are on the brink of commercial extinction.

Non-lethal whale research

The Great Whale Trail is a collaboration between Greenpeace and scientists working on humpback whales in the South Pacific. With financial support from Greenpeace, humpback whales were tagged by the Cook Islands Whale Research and Opération Cétacés (New Caledonia).

Marine Reserves

In light of the global decline of many marine species, and the rising threats to these species and their ecosystems from pollution, habitat destruction and global warming, a global network of marine reserves is essential to protect ocean ecosystems from human activities. In Canada and around the world, progress in marine protection has been slow. Greenpeace is working to step up the pace…
