Canadians want to take on global warming

Feature story - December 1, 2008
A new poll, commissioned by Greenpeace and three other Canadian groups, shows that a solid majority of Canadians want the federal government to fight global warming. Canadians support taking action even during the economic crisis, according to the poll.

Greenpeace activists chained to the Prime Minister's front gate, bearing a placard identifying him as a climate criminal.

The level of support for taking action even during the economic crisis is similar to the level of support Canadians gave to parties in the October federal election that promised to address climate change. More than 62 per cent of the voters supported parties that promised strong action on global warming.

The Harper government has done nothing to combat global warming. Clearly, Canadians want their federal government to implement a plan to reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and to be part of global efforts to stop the catastrophic climate change that will result from global warming.

Greenpeace commissioned the poll along with the United Church of Canada, Climate Action Network and the Pembina institute.
