Greenpeace is running an ad in The Hill Times in Ottawa today calling on federal civil servants to call us with tips of information on how the Harper government is trying to undermine climate change policies in other countries in an effort to promote the tar sands.
The ad uses a photo from our recent “separate oil and state” action in Calgary where we criticized the fact that the tar sands industry in Alberta has too much influence over the policies of the Stelmach government.
In the ad, we ask federal civil servants who are disillusioned with federal climate policy to contact us with information on what the Harper government is hiding on its policies. There is a phone tip line and an email address federal employees can use. We guarantee confidentiality.
The ad supports the release today by the Climate Action Network (CAN) of federal documents that show that officials from the federal government are systematically trying to kill clean energy and climate change policies in other countries to promote the tar sands and the interests of oil companies. The documents reveal that Ottawa has set up an “Oil Sands Advocacy Strategy” in the Department of Foreign Affairs to undermine climate policies elsewhere.
CAN is issuing a report on the federal efforts to undermine climate change policies. The report is based on material CAN has obtained through Access to Information requests. The report documents extensive evidence of federal and Alberta government lobbying efforts against clean energy policies proposed in three jurisdictions: California, the United States and Europe. The report is titled: “The Tar Sands’ Long Shadow: Canada’s Campaign to Kill Climate Policies Outside Our Borders.”
Greenpeace is a member of CAN which is a network of more than 75 of Canada’s leading non-governmental organizations.
