Dear candidate for the 2008 election

On September 16, the documentary THE WORLD ACCORDING MONSANTO will be released publicly. I strongly encourage you to watch this film as it provides important information about one of the world’s largest seed and chemical companies, and the biggest purveyor of genetically engineered (GE) seeds on the planet. The film has awakened audiences around the world to the dangers posed by Monsanto and its products, in particular GE crops and food.

The film alleges that Monsanto has used lobbying tactics – including attempts at government corruption and falsified reports – to gain acceptance of its products. It appears that these lobbying efforts have been rewarded here in Canada, where we have still not ratified the Biosafety Protocol on GE organisms, nor do we have any independent scrutiny of new GE products or mandatory labelling for GE foods.

I strongly feel that if you watch this film, you will be better informed and motivated to address issues that concern all Canadians regarding the regulation of GE foods and crops. If you are unable to attend the screening in person, I suggest that you to obtain a copy of the DVD through the National Film Board and watch it.

I also would like to know if you will support an immediate moratorium on all new GE crops and foods approval until the government’s procedure for GE risk assessment has be reviewed and strengthened to meet strict scientific standard based on the precautionary principle.

Thank you.
