Feature story - October 6, 2008
The countdown is on for British Columbia's provincial government to implement the promises they made to protect the Great Bear Rainforest, and Greenpeace needs your help to ensure that Premier Gordon Campbell and his government "Keep the Promise."
In February 2006, Greenpeace helped secure a landmark agreement with the Province, First Nations, logging companies and other environmental groups to protect the Great Bear Rainforest, the world's largest coastal temperate rainforest. With just six months left until the March 31, 2009 deadline to implement the agreement, Greenpeace is calling on supporters to send an email to remind Premier Campbell that a promise is a promise, and that time is running out.
What the Province promised
- Two million hectares protected from logging;
- Forest practices that maintain ecosystem integrity;
- Increased decision-making power for First Nations;
- Support for a conservation-based economy for First Nations.
Over the last decade, Greenpeace - with your help - has come so far and is so close to safeguarding this rare and precious rainforest. This unspoilt, magical place is home to the 'Spirit Bear,' a rare white variety of the black bear, as well as forest-nesting marbled murrelet sea birds and salmon-eating coastal wolves. The land agreement that was signed in 2006 represents the single largest rainforest protection agreement in Canada's history.
Greenpeace has been working hard to ensure the deadline is kept. Several key commitments, such as the protection of two million hectares from logging, have been reached, but more work remains to be done to fulfil all commitments. Otherwise, the ecological health of the Great Bear Rainforest remains at risk.
