Update: Robson Bight diesel spill investigation

Feature story - October 11, 2007
Greenpeace supporters and partners succeeded in raising the $35,000 necessary to investigate the Robson Bight diesel spill wreckage.

Greenpeace is concerned about the health of one of the largest resident orca populations near Vancouver Island, after a diesel spill in an ecological reserve.

The following letter was sent to Greenpeace supports who helped us raise the money required for the Robson Bight investigation

Dear Supporter,

Thanks to your generous support, along with our partners, we were successful at raising the $35,000 needed to conduct the underwater investigation of the Robson Bight diesel spill wreckage.

The Coast Guard has refused to commit to an investigation to date, so we have been given no other choice but to conduct it ourselves. In cooperation with the Living Oceans Society, local whale watching companies and local research institutions, we have launched our plan to conduct the assessment of the wreckage later this month.

We have booked the equipment needed to locate and photograph the wreckage and are in the process of finalizing details. We will keep you posted as plans unfold.

Thanks again for your support- your contribution is helping to ensure the Northern Resident killer whales and other marine species in the Robson Bight area are not further threatened by contamination.

For the oceans,

Sarah King

A special thank you to Greenpeace supporters Kern (age 7), his younger brother Vega and his friend Cole who raised $140 for the orcas by selling some of their toys at a yard sale.
