Toronto, Canada — Greenpeace has joined forces with farmers and civil society organizations in Canada, the United States and Australia to oppose genetically engineered (GE) wheat by signing a joint statement that reiterates their opposition to GE wheat and their commitment to preventing its commercialization around the world.

With the support of a few agrochemical agriculture organizations, Monsanto is once again leading the charge by trying to have GE wheat approved and commercialized in Canada, the United States and Australia. These three countries are the world’s leading exporters of wheat and represent close to 50% of the world trade of this essential food.

The first signatory organizations
National Farmers Union (Canada); Canadian Biotechnology Action Network; Union Paysanne (Canada); Union Biologique Paysanne (Canada); Réseau Québécois contre les OGM; Saskatchewan Organic Directorate (Canada); Network of Concerned Farmers (Australia); Organic Federation of Australia; Biological Farmers of Australia; Greenpeace; Gene Ethics (Australia); National Family Farm Coalition (USA); Western Organization of Resource Councils (USA); Center for Food Safety (USA); Organic Consumers Association (USA).

The Definitive Global Rejection of Genetically Engineered Wheat, co-signed by Greenpeace, responds point by point to a text published on May 14, 2009 (“Wheat Commercialization Statement”) by a few agrochemical agriculture organizations in Canada, the United States and Australia in which they pledged to “work toward the goal of synchronized commercialization of biotech traits in our wheat crop.” In 2004, the intensive mobilization of farmers and consumers forced Monsanto to withdraw its application for approval of GE wheat designed to be tolerant to the herbicide Roundup.

ACTION!
The first signatories of the statement are calling on other organizations around the world to join the fight against GE wheat by co-signing the Definitive Global Rejection of Genetically Engineered Wheat before August 31, 2009. Help us circulate this appeal. Organizations can sign the statement by visiting the site of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN).

If you are an individual Canadian citizen, you can send an e-mail to the federal Minister of Agriculture, as well as to the leaders of the opposition parties. It only takes a few seconds…
