In May, Greenpeace released Out of Stock, Out of Excuses: Ranking retailers on seafood sustainability that grades major supermarket chains. The report shows that all supermarkets are failing to provide Canadians with seafood that is sustainably caught and farmed but some are taking good initiatives.
Since the release of the report, Greenpeace has undertaken a confrontation campaign to convince supermarkets to stop selling Redlist seafood and to adopt policies that promote the sustainability of seafood.
Activists have confronted management at 17 stores in three provinces. Volunteers informed customers about their supermarkets ranking outside the stores and demonstrated peacefully against the sale of Redlist species in stores. A total of nine activists were arrested.
Hundreds of Canadians have already contacted supermarkets and asked them to stop selling Redlist species. Add your voice!
