I had never dreamed about working for Greenpeace before I joined the organisation.

I was in the science stream at secondary school, although I eventually discovered that I wasn't very enthusiastic about science subjects. As an undergraduate, I majored in political science and my social science training made me become a bit critical, if not cynical, about the world. After graduation I chose to study for a Certificate of Education with the aim of becoming a teacher. Depressingly, when I searched for a teaching job the best I could find was a teaching assistant post. In summer 2004 I saw that Greenpeace was recruiting campaigners. My application was successful and I've been working for Greenpeace ever since.

I joined Greenpeace because I wanted to help build a strong civil society and to gain experience of working with the community, to put into practice the theories that I learnt from my post graduate study in political sociology. Back then; although I generally understood the value of being environmentally friendly, I didn’t incorporate it into my life. I was most interested in democratic development and the widening gap between the rich and the poor, so the environment was least on my mind. However, my experiences at Greenpeace have changed my mind. Protecting the environment to ensure a sustainable development path is integral to society. Continuing the destruction of our natural resources in the name of economic growth costs society dear and risks our future.
