Genetically engineering the food we eat is an inherently risky process. Current understanding of genetics is extremely limited and scientists do not know the long-term effects of releasing these unpredictable organisms into the environment and people's diets.

Yet, genetically engineered (GE) ingredients are freely entering our food supply without adequate safeguards in place and without explicit consumer consent and knowledge.

Although transnational companies and their political supporters want us to believe that GE food is safe and thoroughly tested, growing awareness about its threats has sparked a global wave of rejection by consumers, farmers and food companies in many of the world's largest food markets.

Due to consumer pressure, supermarkets have cleared GE food from their shelves, global food companies have removed GE ingredients from their products and leading pig and poultry producers have promised not to supply animals with GE feed.

However, double standards are still common. While in Europe global food companies favour the consumer's right to know by labelling GE-food and removing GE ingredients from their products, these companies force feed GE foods to consumers, without telling them, in other parts of the world including China.

A precautionary approach to public health and safety is necessary where risks are unknown.

Like the consumers in other parts of the world, Chinese consumers should have the right to know about genetically engineered ingredients in your food and to choose safe, healthy and environmental-friendly food.
Our Shoppers' Guide to Avoiding GE Food (in Chinese) can help you choose non-GE food.
