Losing Paradise
The Paradise Forests, spanning the Indonesian archipelago,
through Papua New Guinea and
on to the Solomon Islands
in the Pacific, are the largest intact area of ancient forest in the
Asia-Pacific region. They support tens of thousands of plant and animal species
and myriad peoples and cultures. These Forests are disappearing at an alarming
rate due to rampant illegal logging.
If the current rate of
destruction of these unique, irreplaceable forests continues, the Paradise
Forests could disappear completely within a decade, leading to a collapse in
all of the life that depends on them. This would have global impacts.
‘Reclaiming Paradise’
Chopsticks Sales
To safeguard the intrinsic
ecological, economic and cultural value of the Paradise Forests, urgent action
is needed now to stamp out illegal logging. For several years, Greenpeace have
been working with local people in the Solomon Islands to set up an eco-forestry
project, whereby forest resources are used sustainably, ensuring both the
livelihoods of the local community and the protection of the forests. We have
used some of this eco-timber from the Paradise Forests to produce chopsticks
for fundraising purposes, so that we can continue our work to protect the last
remaining ancient forests and to safeguard a future for all life that depends
on them. The Chopsticks Sales will start in October 2006 and a large-scale
promotion and fundraising campaign will be launched in November to gain public support for the protection of
the Paradise Forests. If you want to participate, please read on – together we
can make a difference:
