PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

 

The Media Officer is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategy and media work to help Greenpeace achieve its organizational and campaign objectives.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1.          Offer strategic advice to campaign teams and other departments on how to use media to achieve objectives.

2.          Work with campaign teams, communications staff and others to plan and execute media activities.

3.          Write and, in some cases, initiate press releases and information for media and campaigns.

4.          Ensure the standard of Greenpeace media outputs fulfill professional and high quality standards.

5.          Handle media inquiries, advice and arrange media interviews for Greenpeace staff.

6.          Build and maintain a sound general knowledge of all Greenpeace campaigns and issues, in order to be capable of responding to general press inquiries.

7.          Develop relationship with the media industry; build up and maintain media contact database.

8.          Monitor and evaluate media coverage of Greenpeace and our activities in China and globally.

9.          Monitor, advice and respond to external media activities which are related to Greenpeace and our campaigns.

10.      Proactively seek and recommend communications opportunities to achieve Greenpeace’s organizational and campaign objectives.

11.      Liaise and work together with media officers in GPI and other NROs.

12.      Ensure that Greenpeace China operates in parallel with on going developments within the media industry in China and globally.

13.      Work with the Image Officer in acquiring, processing and distributing images.

14.      Be on call after hours and weekends as necessary during major Greenpeace campaign pushes and for urgent press calls.

15.      Perform other duties as designated by the line manager.

Tact and Enthusiasm: to function effectively within a highly charged atmosphere, under public scrutiny.

 

Computer Skills: to utilize word‑processing and telecommunications capabilities; to develop written materials on campaign issues and strategies.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

 

Knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace (including policies, guidelines, programs, campaigns and project activities): to lead activities in support of the world's largest environmental protection group.

 

Knowledge of environment/ecology issues in general: to provide specialized expertise; to promote environmental concerns.

 

Knowledge of the media including responsibilities, equipment, techniques, policies, practices, scope, audience, tactics, structure, impact: to use the media to further organizational and campaign objectives; to increase awareness and gain public support; to communicate with relevant industry and government.

 

Knowledge of communications and campaign techniques, strategies and practices: to provide key leadership and assume the role of communications specialist with respect to a critical area of ecological concern.
