Purpose of Position:
To give scientific support to
Greenpeace Toxics campaign, including design and execution of
environmental sampling, testing and monitoring programmes. To ensure
high scientific standards are developed and maintained. To become
conversant with current scientific thinking. To monitor current
scientific thinking so as to promote science and its use in policy in a
way which will facilitate the elimination of toxic chemicals.
Responsibilities:
1. Scientific/Campaign
- Cooperate with the Science
Unit of Greenpeace International (GRL) on organizing scientific
activities, and ensure that necessary analytical quality control
standards are upheld;
- Design and, where appropriate, carry out
field sampling projects and report on and interpret results of such
projects in consultation with the GRL;
- Keep abreast of scientific literature with special reference to environmental chemistry;
- Assist
in the broader quality control functions of the GRL by participating in
the review of documents if deemed necessary and desirable;
- Research, in depth, particular scientific subjects of interest to Greenpeace China campaigns;
- Input to planning procedures for campaigns in relation to science strategy and tactics;
- Maintain
awareness of the political and social influences on science and how
they may influence Greenpeace China campaigns and be able to advise
accordingly;
- Advise Greenpeace China campaigns on health and safety aspects of scientific field activities and environmental sampling;
- Develop
and maintain personal professional status by membership of professional
bodies, participating in scientific conferences and through
publications in learned journals;
- Make effective use of areas
of individual expertise, knowledge and experience so as to provide
major contributions to Greenpeace China campaign goals;
- Build and maintain contacts with other scientists and institutions to advance the work of Greenpeace China;
- Participate in other Greenpeace China project teams as determined by the Campaign Director of Greenpeace China.
2. Other
- Act
as a representative of Greenpeace China to external bodies/the media as
appropriate, in observance of Greenpeace China's guidelines and in
consultation with the Campaign Manager (Toxics) of Greenpeace China;
- Promote the activities of Greenpeace China in a positive and professional manner at all times;
- Participate in meetings as directed by the Campaign Manager (Toxics) of Greenpeace China;
- Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the post as delegated by the Campaign Director of Greenpeace China.
Requirements:
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant science subject;
- Knowledge of scientific areas (both broadly-based and in-depth) appropriate to environmental protection;
- Ability to interpret information and research results in the
context of contemporary scientific literature, environmental conditions
and environmental policy;
- Practical experience of, and ability to devise plans for, scientific field work;
- Ability to locate and interpret research publications and documents in relevant fields;
- Ability to keep abreast of developments in relevant scientific areas;
- Experience of writing research reports/scientific areas;
- Ability to convey scientific information, both verbally and in written form, to non-scientific individuals/groups;
- Experience of presentations to scientific conferences;
- Experience with analytical software, laboratory information and database systems;
- Commitment to the aims of Greenpeace;
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Mandarin and preferably one other modern language;
- Experience of working as a team member;
- Administration/Organization;
- Ability to work to tight deadlines.
The
post will be based in Beijing. The Scientist (Toxics) will be 2-year contract and subject to renewal.
