More success for Greenpeace’s Food Safety campaign: PARKnSHOP launches vegetable ID tracing system
Greenpeace’s food safety campaign has recorded another success with PARKnSHOP's launch of a vegetable ID tracing system. Since we exposed pesticide found in vegetables selling in Hong Kong’s two largest supermarket chains last year, we have been urging the supermarket chains to improve the monitoring system of vegetable sources and enhance pesticide testing. The recent commitment from PARKnSHOP marks our success in safeguarding the food safety for all imported vegetables.
Greenpeace believes supermarkets should take the lead to safeguard their vegetables sold and guarantee consumers to eat safe. We need your support to maintain our pressure on those responsible, the food retailers and the government, for ensuring consumer rights. |

Energy efficient light bulbs for the needy
The first stage of Greenpeace’s ‘GoGreen! Save A Million kWh of Electricity campaign began with donations of energy saving light bulbs to the grassroots through the Neighbourhood and Worker’s Service Centre. The current heat wave, and the casualties it brings, is a sign of global warming already around the corner.
Everyone can help combat global warming by switching to energy saving light bulbs as the first easy step to slow down the problem. Furnishing Brand IKEA’s donation of 1,000 energy saving light bulbs contributed to success of the event.
Greenpeace set up a booth on 29th July 2007 at Wanchai’s Farmers’ Market to promote the message of global warming as well. Games as well as a photo exhibition on Greenpeace’s expedition to witness glaciers retreat at the Himalayas were launched. Over 300 “Climate Change Lucky Bags” including Greenpeace’s latest HOW TO SAVE THE CLIMATE booklet were also distributed at the event.

Harry Potter magic helps protect forests
In 2005 Canadian and UK publishers of Harry Potter got the eco message sent by Greenpeace supporting readers and author J.K.Rowling herself when they agreed to publish “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” on ancient forest friendly paper. However, the US publisher did not. The just published blockbusting final installment of the Potter series “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” saw an increase in forest friendly paper content from the UK and Canadian publishers, which was welcomed by Greenpeace, and an about turn from the US publisher Scholastic. Nearly two-thirds of the 16,700 tons of paper used for Scholastic’s edition was approved by the Forest Stewardship Council saving thousands of trees.
Although over 40 per cent of the UK book publishing industry has now introduced ancient forest friendly paper policies and other large markets like the US and Canada are getting the message, there’s still a long way to go. As you enjoy reading, remember the Harry magic and sign-up to help us protect the world’s last remaining ancient forests.

Music to save the Climate
|
Greenpeace, together with local artists Anthony Wong, at17 and other members of musical cooperative People Mountain People Sea paraded through Causeway Bay on Sunday 22nd July. The 50 strong parade carried banners that read “Save Energy” and “Sing for the Climate” and also blew up a 2 metres high energy saving light bulb balloon. Through music and action we hope to encourage citizens to help slow climate change and to participate in the upcoming ”PMPS Go Greenpeace” concert on August 21st. Please join us to sing along with People Mountain People Sea and promote environmental protection – Let’s GoGreen.
