The Fantastic Three:
Meet our Fundraisers on the frontline

James ‘The Messenger’

「I'm enthusiastic about the “Green” world and want you to know as well!」

Hello everybody, I’m James. I’ve been working as a fundraiser for Greenpeace China for almost a year now. Although it’s a short time, it’s already been the most unforgettable experience of my life!

I always enjoyed nature and am interested in environmental issues, so as soon as saw an ad. for a fundraiser on the website I applied and got the job! Apart from talking to people on the streets about supporting our work, I have also participated in Greenpeace’s NVDA (Non-Violent Direct Action) training programme. Since my training I have taken part in several Greenpeace actions to highlight environmental problems and to force solutions for a better future. I am really happy to be able to do something positive to improve the environment that we live in.

The action that I really want to share all with you was the one that I participated in May of this year, when Greenpeace redecorated the Golden Bauhinia statue to resemble an energy-efficient light bulb to highlight energy wastage from the use of incandescent light bulbs and to push for legislation to ban them. Initially, I was just part of the support staff but as the plan progressed I was asked to join the climbing team. Could you imagine how happy and excited I was? When my mother and friends saw me in the next day’s news coverage, they called me to say how surprised and shocked they were! However, since understanding the reason for the action and why I am happy to participate, they are all very supportive and encouraging.

I took action because our world is warming due to climate change, the most serious environmental issue that we face. It is our responsibility to take action to bring about positive change. This is why I am here and really hope you can continue to support our work and encourage others to join us as well. Together we can make a difference!

Joey ‘The Herald’

「I am optimist and want to share my “Green” ideas with all of you!」

Hi, Joey here. Working here is my first full time job, and this excited me a lot! Before I joined Greenpeace, I had a simple understanding of environmental protection issues – protect our world, use less and save energy…etc. However, now I have a more in-depth understanding. Environmental protection work is a long road. First we have to highlight the problems to raise public awareness, and then persuade government and business to change their policies to implement the solutions. I really believe in my work and try to communicate my passion to others to motivate them to support Greenpeace’s work for a green and peaceful future.

I don’t consider myself a traditional sales person, as I’m not selling products or services. Instead, I sell ideas for environmental protection, which Greenpeace puts into action, to obtain further public support for our work. I am happy to have chosen a meaningful career, and something that I believe in strongly. Greenpeace doesn’t solicit or accept donations from government or business, as it’s important for our work that we maintain our independence. Therefore, we rely on the support of around 3 million individuals like you around the world to support our work to improve our environment.

Like others, I sometimes upset by the rejections we receive from people on the street. However, we have a very strong team of fundraisers who support each other through the difficult times. The occasional praise and support we get from some public also really gives me strength and encourages me to continue. I strongly believe that my passion and hard work helps me to recruit more people to become Greenpeace members and I’d like to thank everyone who supports our work. Your support can make our dreams come true, thanks so much!

Tommy ‘The Bridge’

「I’m young but I can show my care to our world as well!」

I’m Tommy but all my Greenpeace teammates call me “brother”. The reason? I was only 17 years old when I worked here. However, my youth didn’t affect my passion for environmental protection work. I’ve been praised for the conviction that my words carry. I really care about the world that I live in and I want to live in a clean environment so from now on, I spread my ideas to many more people and try to invite them joining us in the fight for a cleaner environment. For these nine months, I sometimes get disappointed by the negative responses of some people, but I never give up. I cannot easily describe how good it feels to successfully convince people to support us. One lady I met who already donated to 8 other organisations presented a real challenge. I persuaded her to support us by telling her that we worked on the most critical environmental issues worldwide and that the poor suffer the impacts of a degraded environment first and most. The lady was convinced and became a member of Greenpeace. Happy memories like this keep me going everyday!

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, so I believe that my hard work will bring success. Environmental protection related to various scopes and ideas that might be quite difficult for me to understand all, however, I always prepare well before I go out on the streets and also learn as much as possible from the senior fundraisers. Environmental protection is a team effort and we altogether invite you to join us!

Cheer them on!

After reading about our fundraisers, we hope that you can understand their passion and commitment. Next time when you see them working on the street, say hello to them and give them your support, you’ll make them more energetic!
