November campaign update:

Dear Greenpeace Friends,

From December 3-14, politicians from across the world will meet in Bali, Indonesia, for a vital UN climate change conference. Greenpeace representatives from around the world will be present at the meeting calling on our world leaders to take urgent action to fight the climate crisis, so this meeting is crucial.
We know it is possible to keep the worst impacts of climate change - such as extreme weather events, water crises, and increased hunger - from putting millions of people at risk.
Read more about our campaign to halt climate change and other work in HK, China and around the world! It’s been an extremely active month.

HK Green groups call on Gov’t to, “Regulate CO2 from Power Plants Now.”

Greenpeace with other 5 Green groups issued a joint declaration and the representatives marched to the Environmental Bureau HQ on 27th November, bearing a banner reading “Regulate CO2 from Power Plants” to urge the government to limit CLP and HEC’s power plant CO2 emissions and to impose stricter energy efficiency measures when formulating the latest Scheme of Control Agreement (SOC). Stop Whaling, and for whales NOW.

The Japanese government whaling fleet has left port and is on its way to hunt and kill more than 1000 whales, including 50 endangered fin whales, 50 threatened humpbacks whales, and 935 minke whales in the name of “scientific research”. It is the biggest hunt since the moratorium on commercial whaling came into being over twenty years. The Greenpeace ship Esperanza is tracking the whaling fleet and ready to take direct, non-violent action to stop this senseless whale slaughter. YES! I want to Support Greenpeace and become a Whale Defender

Unauthorised U.S. GE rice found in Beijing

On 20th November we released results of tests on imported food in Beijing. We collected ten U.S. food samples from two supermarkets in Beijing and found that one imported rice products from U.S. contained herbicide resistant GE rice, which has not been approved for import or for sale on the market by Chinese authorities. We urge the U.S. to strengthen export controls of food products and caution Chinese consumers against the imported rice from the U.S. Read more

Non Violent Direct Action in Indonesia

The next phase of Kyoto climate treaty negotiation are less than a week away, ministers from governments around the world will meet in Bali to decide the critical next steps to take in order to avoid catastrophic climate change impacts. Much deeper emissions cuts have to be agreed and fast accelerating emissions from deforestation for logging and palm oil plantation urgently need to be regulated. Palm oil companies are breaking the law and draining the life out of remaining peatland forests. Our “Forest Defender Camp” in Riau was set up to protect these irreplaceable forests remain to highlight the problem of clearance for palm oil ahead of the Bali meeting Greenpeace China’s very own Forest Defender, Thomas Choi, was at the camp and you can read about his experiences here

YES! I want to support Greenpeace’s work to protect the Forests

Business demand for Gov’t leadership against global warming

Thirteen local and overseas chambers of Commerce answered our questionnaire in October on their view about global warming. All respondents representing over 9000 enterprises in HK agreed that business in HK should concern the crisis as climate change impacts may threaten their business operations and production facilities in HK and the Pearl River Delta. In addition, most believed the SAR Administration should assess the impacts of climate change in HK. Our aim with this survey was to join with the business community to urge the government to establish thorough policy steps and concrete targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Read more

Members Gathering

“I can’t believe what would happen if 80% of the Himalayan glaciers would disappear in less than 30 years, as these glaciers are the source of major rivers in Asia, including the Yangtze, Yellow River, Mekong, Ganges and Indus. It’s difficult to imagine how humans will deal with the impact” said by S.P. Lo, the Campaign Director of the Greenpeace China at our most recent Greenpeace Members Event.
In order to share with our members’ our work on climate change we organized a “Greenpeace goes to United Nations” sharing by S.P. Lo” on the 16th November with our members. We invited S.P. to talk about the significance of his UN trip in September and our campaigner, Gloria, to update members about our upcoming campaign work to halt climate change. Over 70 members participated in the sharing and were full of questions. We received a positive response from members about the sharing and the tasty organic dinner which we provided. We thank you for your participation and look forward to seeing you all again at other member events.
