Greenpeace has been fighting for mandatory GE food labelling since 1999. Currently 54 countries and regions have implemented such labelling. Past opinion polls also found that over 90% of Hong Kong citizens supported the scheme.
Over these eight years, the Hong Kong SAR government has been playing down the risk of GE food and delayed legislating for mandatory GE labelling by claiming there is a lack of international consensus. Last year, the government put forward a voluntary labelling scheme, which has been proved a failure. Only a mandatory labelling scheme can protect the rights of consumers.
Please immediately sign the following letter to the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. York Chow, and the Consultant to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Consultant Dr. Ho Yuk-yin, calling on the government to announce a timetable for mandatory GE food labelling scheme.
