In response to the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, Greenpeace has sent a research team to the site of the earthquake to identify and monitor possible environmental hazards triggered by the earthquake. Here is their latest blog.

First Impressions

May 16 - This morning, Zhongyu, Liu Bing and I arrived in Chengdu and then headed straight for the earthquake disaster zone. We aimed to visit all the chemical plants in the area to identify and monitor any potential environmental hazards arising from the earthquake.

Chemical plant illicitly operates at the disaster zone

May 19. Chengdu – Qingbaijiang – Guanghan – Shifang.

We departed Chengdu and are heading towards the front line. Most four-wheel drives in the city have been dispatched to the disaster zone, but our friends at Top4WD were kind enough to spare us a Cherokee, which had just returned from Panzhouxiang Town (one of the worst-hit areas) on a relief supplies run. The vehicle’s interior was covered in white flecks of disinfectant – a necessary precaution for entering the disaster zone. We all hoped that this wise old horse of a vehicle would safely carry us on our long journey.

May 29 - We finally finished our investigation at Mianyang, so early this morning we started towards Deyang. Chemical factories are usually located near a river, so we followed the Mianyun River and checked out the factories one by one.
