9th June, 2008 - The newly established state Peaceland in the Brdy region has been attacked today by the Czech military police. All present activists were arrested and taken away. Even the climbers on the trees were taken down.
Ten vehicles full of military policemen arrived this afternoon to the borders of Peaceland, surrounded the State and then began to arrest the citizens who put up only a passive resistence and let themselves to be loaded in to the police cars. The policemen even confiscated a camera on which one activist was taking video of the attack. The police action had been apparently planned and even though the Greenpeace activists had information about the possible attack, they did not leave.
“We are strongly protesting against the intervention of the Czech Military Police. They had no authority to arrest within the borders of Peaceland. The Czech Prime Minister, Mirek Topolánek, whom we officially informed of the new State's establishment and invited to Peaceland, said he had known about the attack in advance. He must be crazy if he thinks of this attack as a friendly visit,” said Jan Freidinger, Greenpeace coordinator of the Radar project.
The reason for establishing an independent state is a response to the contradicting global safety and Czech security, between the Czech government and the citizens of Peaceland. „We are convinced that the whole project of national missile defense (NMD), including locating one of the components on Czech territory, brings within serious risks where on the top is standing global inbalance, rising international tension and the start of new nuclear armsrace. We don´t consider this missile defense project the right tool to solve the serious problem before us.“ said Jiří Tutter, Executive Director of Greenpeace and citizen of Peaceland.
Multi-genre festival " Welcome to Peaceland" had more then sixty visitors yesterday whom braved the military woods to express support. Theater, live music, and dance sounded off throughout the grounds, spot height 718. Special guest Charlie One, singer and songwriter from Czech band Ohm Square, sparked the event by performing politically charged new songs from Ohm's new album " Taking Shape"..
