Toxic fertilizer byproduct: too close for comfort

Pictured directly behind this duck farm is the Jinhe Phosphate Chemical Plant. Investigations made by Greenpeace East Asia have exposed the dumping of massive amounts of hazardous waste in the Southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan. The stacks of phosphogypsum, a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer production, were found much closer to residential areas than the minimum required distances set forth by Chinese regulations on hazardous waste storage.
